Gazette announces staff reduction
Thursday, June 12, 2008

SCHENECTADY — The Daily Gazette today eliminated six positions through layoffs, General Manager Daniel Beck said.

Three of those positions were in the newsroom.

“Unfortunately, due to difficult business conditions, The Daily Gazette Company has reduced its full-time staff by six positions,” Beck said.

Total employment at the newspaper stands at 162 full-time and 84 part-time employees.

Unfortunately, due to difficult business conditions ...

I cancelled my subscription years ago and have repeatedly declined promotional offers to renew my subscription.  When I have the luxury of free time to read the paper (occasionally on Sundays), I purchase the Albany Times Union.  I believe that the circulation of the Daily Gazette has decreased significantly over the years and suspect that it will continue to do so until the staff begin to focus on reporting the news in an unbiased manner rather than publishing promotional pieces for the Metroplex and for those in elected office who comprise the majority party.

The Gazette also seems to have lost much of its advertising (display and classified).  You don't see as much
as you did years ago.  I can say that two businesses that are owned by family members have significantly reduced or discontinued adverstising in the Gazette due to cost and low readership.

agreed. Their quality of reporting has gone way downhill - and with the TU's readership increasing, more businesses want to advertise there - and in their online edition, which has significantly higher quality/quantity of news than the Gazette.

Unfortunately both papers have become politically bias. This lay off will only decline the Gazette even more.
