CDC: Tomatoes Eyed in Salmonella Cases in 9 States

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

ATLANTA -- An outbreak of salmonella food poisoning first linked to uncooked tomatoes has now been reported in nine states, U.S health officials said Tuesday.

Lab tests have confirmed 40 illnesses in Texas and New Mexico as the same type of salmonella, right down to the genetic fingerprint. An investigation by Texas and New Mexico health authorities and the Indian Health Service tied those cases to uncooked, raw, large tomatoes.

At least 17 people in Texas and New Mexico have been hospitalized. None have died, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Another 30 people have become sick with the same Salmonella Saintpaul infection in Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Idaho, Illinois and Indiana. CDC investigators are looking into whether tomatoes were culprits there, too.

In Texas and New Mexico, raw large tomatoes _ including Roma and red round tomatoes _ were found to be a common factor in the 40 illnesses. But no farm, distributor or grocery chain has been identified as the main source, said Casey Barton Behravesh, a CDC epidemiologist working on the investigation.

"The specific type and source of tomatoes is under investigation," she said.

Salmonella is a bacterial infection that lives in the intestinal tracts of humans and other animals. The bacteria are usually transmitted to humans by eating foods contaminated with animal feces.

Most infected people suffer fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps starting 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness tends to last four to seven days.

Many people recover without treatment. However, severe infection and even death is possible. Infants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at greatest risk for severe infections.

In Texas and New Mexico, the patients ranged in age from ages 3 to 82. Of the 40, 38 were interviewed. Most said they ate raw tomatoes from either stores or restaurants before becoming ill between April 23 and May 27.

Another 17 cases are under investigation in New Mexico, CDC officials said.

So do the illegals know where they should be going to the bathroom? Clearly not in the vegetable fields. Or are they beginning to use human manure instead of animal? It appears that we have not had as many salmonella outbreaks as we have since the illegals came to town. Hey...someone should tell them that this is America. And only bears sh** in the woods.

That is why we subsidize our farmers....so they can purchase farm equipment from their friends John Deere and the rest of them,,,they never have to touch a tomatoe and can take a bathroom break where ever they want......

It would be nice if the CDC would hurry up and get out info on the specifics.  I mean, do I want to buy tomatoes in the grocery stores right now?  Where are the tomatoes from originally?

Tomatoes grown in N.Y. safe, official says

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker released a statement Tuesday declaring tomatoes grown in New York to be safe to consume.
Hooker said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed this information late Monday and expanded its list of production areas not associated with the outbreak to include New York.
According to state officials, New York is a significant producer of tomatoes, ranking 13th among U.S. states, but New York’s tomato season typically does not start until late June.
“However, there are a handful of greenhouse operations throughout the state that are offering New York grown tomatoes, which are safe to consume and have not been linked to the recent salmonella outbreak,” Hooker stated.
On June 7 the FDA alerted consumers nationwide that a salmonellosis outbreak appears to be linked to consumption of certain types of raw red tomatoes and products containing raw red tomatoes. The specifi c type and source of tomatoes are under investigation. According to federal officials preliminary data suggests that raw red plum, raw red Roma, or raw round red tomatoes are the cause.
The FDA is recommending consumers limit their tomato consumption to tomatoes that have not been implicated in the outbreak, which includes cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached and tomatoes grown at home.
If consumers do intend to eat raw red plum, raw red Roma, or raw red round tomatoes, Hooker recommends they do so only if the fruit is grown and harvested from the states and countries listed on FDA’s Web site at http://www.fda.gov/  oc/opacom/hottopics/tomatoes. html.

I wish they'd figure out where they originated from.  Geez, China doesn't export tomatoes to us, do they?

They should be marked as to where they came from. Just don't buy tomatoes from Wal-Mart. God only knows where they get their stuff from.

I was listening to some news about this on WROW this afternoon, and it sounded like they had Barack Obama write the story.  They said that there are now "x" number of states that it is known to be safe to eat tomatoes from, and "y" number of states that it is not safe for.

The only problem is that the equation finally came out to be the following...

x + y = 51.

???

2nd tomato infection reported in NY

By CATHLEEN F. CROWLEY, Staff writer
Friday, June 13, 2008

ALBANY -- The state Health Department today reported two laboratory-confirmed cases of Salmonella Saintpaul infections in New York state that may be associated with the national outbreak in 23 states linked to tomatoes. Nationwide, 229 outbreak-associated cases were reported. One person died and 25 were hospitalized, none in New York.

The DOH and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommend eating raw red plum, red Roma or red round tomatoes only if grown and harvested from the states and countries listed as safe on the FDA's Web site, http://www.fda.gov.
Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, tomatoes grown at home and tomatoes grown in New York have not been implicated in the outbreak and can be eaten.
Of the state's two laboratory-confirmed cases, one was a New York City resident diagnosed in Pennsylvania, and the second was an Orange County resident. Neither was hospitalized and both have recovered.

Maybe he was counting D.C.?????   Geography was not exactly my favorite, so I don't know what DC is, I mean, are there agricultural regions of DC?

Or could he have been counting P.R.?????

Thats why I grow  as much food as possible and have a bathroom.  Everybody should have a few tomatoes or something even  in a pot on your porch.  Buy local in season from small farmers . Can them and dry them for winter use, and don't depend on the big business "farms" .

Having a bathroom is 'key' here! But in all seriousness, if some don't grow some of their own veggies, they should at least know how to if in the event they have to. And if they don't grow their own, we have many local veggie stands that sell by the bushel, so we can freeze and can if we wanted to.
