Re the March 28 article, “Lawmakers use campaign accounts for ready cash”: The so-called “good government watchdogs” — the same ones who failed to effectively police corrupt public officials, like disgraced former Gov. Eliot Spitzer — are now yapping about campaign funds. Their smokescreen is laughable bordering on ludicrous. I think it’s amazing that these “watchdogs,” who acted more like chihuahuas who were sound asleep while Spitzer was frequenting prostitutes, somehow think they still have any credibility whatsoever. I’m specifically referring to ineffectual groups that seem to turn a blind eye toward public corruption whenever the corrupt public official happens to be a Democrat. Take the Spitzer disgrace as just one of many examples. What did we hear from the “watchdogs” when Eliot was patronizing hookers and abusing his office to politicize the state police? Absolutely nothing. I don’t recall groups like Common Cause, Citizens Union or the League of Women Voters saying much, if anything, about the multiple Spitzer scandals — they were AWOL. Maybe it was a case of chronic laryngitis or maybe the leftward tilt of these groups translated into them pulling their punches when the target happened to be a Democrat. Is it any wonder why the public ignores these groups? TIMOTHY J. GAFFNEY SR. Rotterdam
Good point Mr. Gaffney....but I think the time has come for 'US' to become the watchdogs. Perhaps it is time 'WE' started watching the ones who are suppose to be the watchdogs.
