New e-mail I received today.  I took the liberty of changing Mr. Armey's first name, as the site wanted to label him a "private" with the name he uses.

Tax Day Update: A Day of Wasting and Losing Billions of Dollars

Dear FreedomWorks Member,

Today is the day that Americans are reminded of the confiscatory and confusing nature of our Byzantine tax code. Even the IRS and Congress can’t answer some of the questions citizens have about how to pay for the government through taxes. I have outlined three principles of what a tax code should look like:

First, the tax code should have only one tax rate. Second, it should tax all income once and only once. Third, it should allow families to provide for themselves before they provide for the government. Unfortunately, all of these principles are violated by the current system. Today is a bitter reminder of the disrespect the current code shows to the American people.

If you want to know what a better system would look like, take a minute to calculate your taxes on our Flat Tax Calculator (http://www.cse.org/flattax/index.php). You will see how easy and quick it would be if we had an income tax that was simpler, fairer and flatter.

Congress and Taxes…Differing Plans

While some in Congress are pushing for the largest tax increase in U.S. history, others are putting forth better ideas. Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) has authored a bill called Scrap the Code (http://scrapthecode.org/)(H.R. 510) that would create a pathway to fundamental tax reform by throwing out the current tax code abomination. “Scrap the Code” has long been a slogan of FreedomWorks and it is great to see serious legislative proposals being crafted to make it the law of the land. Rep. Goodlatte’s bill has 97 co-sponsors already and deserves your full support.

Conservative Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) is offering H.R. 2734 (The Tax Increase Prevention Act) today as an amendment to the House budget. This bill would stop the Democrat-proposed $683 billion tax hike on the American people dead in its tracks.

H.R. 2734 is an excellent opportunity to spare working families a tax increase that amounts to thousands of dollars per person. This bill also deserves your support, and you can check back at freedomworks.org to find out how your congressman voted and hold him or her accountable.

During these uncertain economic times, burdening American taxpayers with billions of dollars in higher taxes is unfair and bad public policy. Raising taxes by leaps and bounds while gas and food prices are skyrocketing is the worst way to treat struggling families and businesses. On this tax day, we must remind the politicians in Washington that we deserve better. At a time when Europe is moving toward fundamental tax reform, the U.S. is failing to do the same. Our long-term economic strength depends upon a competitive domestic market, and raising our taxes will move us in the wrong direction.

Sincerely,

Richard Armey
