Abandon unwinnable war on poverty

I see where Sen. Clinton is calling for naming a “poverty czar” [April 4 Wall Street Journal]. This implies that the “war on poverty” is in trouble, and someone needs to jump in and fix things to get the war back on track!
This war has been going on for almost 50 years. If the war on poverty has not produced a victory in all this time, perhaps we need to be considering setting up time lines for withdrawing the “poverty troops.” I think it is necessary to consider ending a prolonged war that shows no evidence of victory being achievable.
How much more of the nation’s wealth do we have to spend to win this one? Can we afford it?

So true. But let's include the war on drugs as well. And I guess I would like to know what government subsidized program does work? I'm sure there are some out there...right?

If the government controls the programs they're destined to fail and cost the taxpayers a ton of money.

there is no war on poverty,,,there is no war on drugs....there is no war on peace etc etc.........it is who we are.....if you want to eat go find the food---THIS IS AMERICAN.....as for those folks that like to 'hold down' the lesser edumacated(like our leaders tend toward)---and for those folks who step over the line to abuse-----it is only in the society's view of wrong that just punishment is served---do we know what a sex offender is yet and what to do with him/her?????nope.....

Compared to the eagle, the rattlesnake is a far better symbol of what this country is about. The eagle constantly circles overhead watching & waiting for something to make the mistake of coming out into the open. The eagle knows everything, watches all, and places itself far above and out of reach of all others.

The rattlesnake, on the other hand, doesn't care what other animals do as long as they stay away. It minds its own business, and expects others just to mind their own too.

I think the eagle is more of a global symbol than an 'inhouse' ideology......I'm glad it wasn't the turkey....although the turkey lacks grace(which is an important character) they are not so easy to hunt with their eye sight as good as it is.....the hunter is required to engage in a hunt with multiple items such as a blind/turkey call/camo outfit etc.......unless one is Daniel Boone.......
