City MHA has $250K grant

SCHENECTADY — City officials received a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help senior citizens, disabled persons and families living in public housing.
The Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority was among four agencies across the state to receive the funding, federal offi - cials announced Wednesday. The funding is part of more than $50 million awarded nationally through the Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency Program.
“This funding helps a wide range of people who live in public housing,” said HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson in a prepared statement. “It gives families the resources they need to get the education or training they need to find jobs.”
Schenectady can use the grant to hire project coordinators to assess resident needs and then link them with the appropriate services. This funding can also be used to provide families with an array of educational programs in order to bolster their self sufficiency, according to HUD.
In addition, the money can be used to supplement after-school and summer programs for children living in public housing. Housing Authority Director Richard Homenick could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

First we don't need to hire yet another project coordinator to assess residents needs. HUD already does that. The unemployment dept. does that. Social Services already has this information. They also have all of this information from the HEAP, Wicks and Food Stamp programs.  And we pay for it!! Another thing....after this so called project coordinator is hired and the grant money is gone, who will then pick up the tab for his/her salary? You got it...US, the taxpayer!
