PetSmart suspends bird sales

By BRIAN NEARING, Staff writer
Monday, January 28, 2008

ALBANY -- It will be spring before exotic birds can be sold again at PetSmart stores in the Capital Region, which is part of a 46-state quarantine imposed by the company after birds elsewhere became ill.

PetSmart has suspended bird sales in 775 stores in 46 states, including seven in the region, because a number of cockatiels tested positive for psittacosis, also known as parrot fever.
Company spokeswoman Jessica Douglas said the sole case of an infected bird in New York State was at a company store in Liverpool near Syracuse. There were no cases locally.
On Dec. 19, PetSmart suspended the sale of birds. A week later, the company sent a letter on the situation to customers who had purchased birds since Oct. 3.
Updates will be posted at the company's Web site at PetSmart or through its customer service department at (800) 738-1385, ext. 2518.

Then there's some stores that I would suggest you don't go shopping in, right here in Rotterdam, and it's not even because they keep them in cages.  Actually flying through the store!

Walmart in the summer has birds everywhere coming in from their garden shop. And so does Lowes and Home Depot. At both Lowes and Home Depot, they are usually around the bird seed. They don't seem to be intimidated by us people either.

It just creeps me out---like the movie The Birds.....I feed them and give them a place to bath and even have a bird house that has been used 3-4 times in a season for couples....it's really cute....I have binoculars and get regulars---2 pairs of mourning doves visit for breakfast lunch and dinner in the summer.
