I was disappointed by the poor quality of the article on astrology in the Nov. 18 Gazette. It did not sink to the level of supermarket tabloids, but it was closer to that than to, for example, The New York Times. Is it really possible that in the 21st century, you have reporters who are not aware that astrology has been totally discredited along with witchcraft, alchemy, ghosts, the Loch Ness Monster, the evil eye, voodoo, etc.? The article did include a few comments from skeptics, but, on the whole, it gave the impression that astrology may well be a reasonable guide to making decisions in life. It presented anecdotal evidence as credible that any educated person should know is worth nearly zero. On the other hand, erudite and entertaining Carl Strock is a gem. He is as good as the best of the nationally syndicated columnists, and that is not hyperbole. I would bet my entire baseball card collection that Carl knows astrology is nothing more than an ancient superstition. ROGER GRASIER Niskayuna

Sorry to break it to you, Roger, but the New York Times, itself, IS about at the same level as the supermarket tabliods. Not much of a difference there.

First Lady Nancy Reagan's relied on a San Francisco astrologer to determine the timing of the President's every public move. The astrologer's advice wreaked havoc with her husband's schedule. At times, the most powerful man on earth was a virtual prisoner in the White House-
Nancy Reagan was big on astrology. She would not do anything until she 'read the stars' first! I believe it can become an obsession. There are people that are paralized while making decisions until they seek their 'astrologer's advise.
Call me old fashioned but I consider it a voo-doo, witchcraft sort of futuristic predictions. They are no different than psychics and tarot card readers! I stay clear of them.

I'll bet there would be plenty of trouble if Pluto lines up with Uranus! There goes another Disney charactor!

Well, I saw one program on a while ago on the Discovery Channel, I think. While I don't believe in astrology, they did say that the reason that Ronald Reagan was not killed when he was shot by John Hinkley Jr. is due to the fact that there was something to do with the astrology and that plans were changed, just minimally, and that is what lead to his survival. All I can say is that I'm glad he served his full 2 terms before this country had its chance to start turning downhill.

Maybe someone could enlighten Al Gore about this 'science'........
