Nothing is sacred to retailers, not even Thanksgiving Day
Your Nov. 21 story, “Black Friday race to start even earlier,” provided store hours and narrative on the Friday shopping hours, especially pointing out the ever-earlier wee opening hours by retailers. However, you neglected the imminent demise of Black Friday; Black Thursday is starting. There’s no place like home for the holidays — like Thanksgiving Day. Yet despite the lack of any necessity, Wal-Mart, Circuit City and Kmart were open on Thanksgiving. It’s a rotten shame. While their richly compensated [bosses] are giving thanks in church or are sitting around the family table for the annual feast, they made their wallets a priority when it comes to their employees. I don’t know who started it, but retailers felt that it was critically important for employees to be in the stores. For some reason they seem to think that the other 363 days of the year do not provide adequate shopping time. And then one retailer tries to be creative with deals on Thanksgiving Day to attract shoppers and the shopping frenzy will grow. Soon, Thanksgiving will be just another day. Yes, I’m from a generation where everything was closed on Sundays and holidays. We managed. We scheduled our time better, our preparations for holidays were better. We were never in a position to even need a supermarket, convenience store or gas station on Thanksgiving Day, And everyone could celebrate. Those who shop are enabling the retailers. Some employees will say they get paid for it, and they volunteered to work. But if not enough employees volunteer, then who must work? MARYANN RUEGE Rotterdam

I worked for K-Mart back in 1993, and even that far back they were open for Thanksgiving. Thanks for the heads up Maryann, but this isn't a new thing. I remember I had to work Thanksgiving Day that year.
Go back a little farther- I remember when it was hard to find batteries on Christmas day
I remember too! Not only batteries but film for the camera or how about 'flash cubes'?

The only reason stores are open is because they know they can play us like a well tuned instrument...the name of that string is called impatience....."We cant wait until the stores are open to get batteries to play this toy. Some store should be open to fill my need want need."

Who is the dingbat who buys an item for someone for Christmas but fails to buy batteries? I happen to agree with that article. Dang it, buy it before Christmas. Actually, batteries should always be kept on hand at home. But then there are the dingbats who, when the power goes out, are looking for batteries for their flash light.
Isn't it amazing. No more do we have to spend hours at home standing the wringer washer doing our laundry. We can put our laundry in the automatic washer and they will be washed while we go to the store to do our shopping. No more do we have to spend time at the clothes line hanging clothes, nor doing ironing, we have automatic dryers and permanament press/no iron fabrics, so we can go out to the store and buy batteries in preparation for Christmas gifts. No more do we have to spend time standing at the sink washing and drying dishes, we can put them in the automatic dishwasher while we go out shopping for the turkey that we used to awaken on Thanksgiving morning only to realize we forgot to buy the bird.
Get the idea?

I have always said the same thing about time. I remember being very young and my mom having a ringer washer. I remember when we had a coal furnace too. There were no clothes driers, disposable diapers, dishwashers, microwaves, hair blowers, rug shampooers, no wax floors, food processors, computers, cell phones, email, etc. And yet there was time every Sunday to spend with family. There was actually seemed to be more time than there is today.
And it is funny how the Home Depot and Lowes have "DO IT YOURSELF" classes when back then, that is how you did everything! Even though I appreciate and am thankful for the modern conveniences we have today, I still think life was much simpler then.

And we still dont have time to pick up the batteries----I think because we added the hair dresser, bar, monday nite football, manicures, massages, gym, etc.........

Dude- I talking way back when everything ran on BIG batteries- double D ? they were expensive- like the price of a piece of meat- I grew up in Yates Village We didnts just keep batteries laying around back then

We are so lucky to have all the conveniences we do so why don't we have more time to do....well.....just nothing?

We keep trying to 'collect', things to do....kind of like gerbils/hamsters......some people collect and pack-rat away newspapers/tupperware containers etc.....some people collect lists of things to do........
