Being a pet owner means being responsible
Let’s put all animal shelters out of business! If you are thinking of getting your child a puppy or kitten for Christmas, consider adopting from an animal shelter or rescue. Save them from a life behind bars. Please consider these items before you buy a pet. Make sure you have enough time for exercise, training, and approximately $1,000 a year for medical care, food, essentials, and plenty of love for 15 years or so. Plus, do not purchase a pup from a pet store; find a good breeder. Never take a pup before eight weeks. If you change your mind after you purchase the pet, you will only be filling up the shelters again. And let’s not forget to be a responsible owner and spay or neuter them. SUSAN WYNNE Little Falls

Let's just go to Mexico and adopt those dogs.....they seem to know 'their place' in the species chain..... |

I couldn't agree with Susans letter more. This is a very serious subject in my book. I just came from the mall and as usual I stopped in the pet store to see the pitiful puppies in the cages. I hate it when they stare back at me like they want to go home with me. The thought crossed my mind that since I'm pretty spry I could probably sneak in and let atleast half of them out before I got caught. I could probably have outrun the clerk with a couple under my arms. I hate the thought of all those guys being sold for upwards of $1,000 when there are so many great dogs at the local shelter. I'm down to one dog and miss not having a second, I've considered going to the shelter for a puppy but my husband will probably kill me.........And as Susan said, ALWAYS spay or neuter. |

Rene, I can't even go into those pet shops. Actually, I don't! I always end up with "watery eyes". These animals come from puppy mills. The females are bred over and over and over and their puppies are sent all over the country with a huge price tag. It should be outlawed. And I am surprised that the animal activists aren't fighting this. I consider it animal abuse. |
