Conservative letters always seem to have a certain stench to them
It is always a treat to read carefully reasoned letters that incisively analyze the events and writings of the period and come up with intelligent conclusions. Then, on the other hand, there are the letters of Dave Dankanich (Aug. 19) and his fellow travelers, all of whom contribute the other kind far too often. Such letters can be readily recognized by all of us, simply by looking for key words and phrases such as “liberal,” “blather,” “lies” and “judicial fiat” (all present in Dankanich’s letter). It’s a little hard to understand what the people in this rightist camp are so displeased about. Their lackeys have had nearly eight years in national office and have taken every opportunity during that time to demonstrate total incompetence in government administration; lack of interest in improving the plight of the needy; willingness to hand frequent gifts to the most venal of large, influential corporations and corrupt lobbyists (as opposed to the other kind, which also exist); and interest in destroying, all at once or incrementally, all successful government initiatives as exemplified by Social Security and Medicare. What more could such people want? Oops, I forgot. What they want is a one-party state, that party being the ultra-right. They apparently would like to convert the United States into something life the model countries Zimbabwe, Belarus and Myanmar. This would require, of course, total suppression (as in those countries) of the “leftwing media.” (As he puts it, such media “was ... biased,” making it clear that he wrongly thinks “media” is a singular form, rather than the Latin plural that it is.) This is more of the repeated dreck about the “liberal media” being responsible for all the country’s ills. Apparently such intemperate examples of right-wing media bias as Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh get a pass. What the “liberal media” have actually done, of course, is to thoroughly expose the utter incompetence of the right wing in such matters as Hurricane Katrina relief, capture of Osama bin Laden, politicalization of the Justice Department and — most of all — the utterly disastrous Iraq war. It embarrasses the right wing to have its clay feet publicized; hence its demonization of the “liberal media.” Well, thank goodness we are not yet a one-party state. I actually have hopes that this will be made still clearer in 2008, and that some degree of competency in government may be within reach. WILLIAM H. PITTMAN Niskayuna
I just love the selective memery of the far left wing nuts. The writer forgot to mention that it was the Dems who voted to dip into the Social Security fund when the money was building up in it to fund their hand out programs. If the Dems hadn't touched that money there would be a huge build up of interest that would have been enough to fund the program well into the future. It was also the Dems who voted to tax Social Security pension payments with Al Gore casting the deciding vote. Don't blame the Conservative Reps for Katrina as it was the lack of help given to the people living there by the Dem politicians who did nothing for the people in New Orleans when they had 4 days notice prior to the hurricanes arrival. There are instances when a person has to get up off his a** and help himself. There's no cure for stupid. The liberal media as the writer said has exposed the Rep right for what it is, the liberal media hasn't told this country the truth about anything political in the last 20 years, remember Dan Rather was he one of your truthful sources?
If it weren't for Sean Hannity and Michael Savage and Rush Linbaugh and Ann Coulter, no one would know anything about the Republicans/Conservatives. The Democrats/Liberals always seem to be talking negatively about these folks. But the way I see it, this was the only way these folks could combat the far left. And Shadow is right about the Social Security.

Mr.Left Wing Nut Pittman...are you nuts. The above statement is clearly what the dems/libs are aiming for!! William, William, William, you must do your research cause you are clearly uninformed!!!!!I don't know what or who you have been listening to, or what rock you have been living under for the last 50+ years or so...but you have your political facts twisted.
So Billy, your homework assignment is to research the reps and dems ON YOUR OWN and write an essay of at least 500 words on their differences in idiology. Try again!

I guess it really doesn't matter what political affilitation one is anymore. People just twist it to fit their ideals. Know one really seems to search for the facts. No one seems to seek to make an informed opinion.
In order to understand 'today' you must be informed about 'yesterday'....the past....history. Our past is what got us to where we are today. And it was decades in the making. We all didn't just wake up one day to find ourselves in a country, state or town that is dyer need of change.
It is as plain as the nose on our faces. We know the plight of the dems and the plight of the reps and the plight of the conserv's. If they do not appear that obvious to anyone....go back and read your history books and continue to the present. THEN you can pick your poison.
