I've bought most of my vehicles in Schdy County previously but the last time I tried to buy a vehicle they didn't have what I wanted and I had to buy in Oneonta.
‘Buy Local’ movement has taken root, now help it grow
Thank you for your editorial of Dec. 5, “Take state Buy Local program to next level,” encouraging the purchase of local farm products. There are many reasons to buy local foods, from the economic and environmental impact, to the increasing health concerns about foreign-grown produce. In recent months, I brought together New York farmers, industry leaders, state agency heads and legislators — upstate and down — to explore ways to expand markets for New York products. We held hearings, hosted farm visits and took a delegation on a tour of wholesale markets in New York City. The evidence we gathered suggests there is not only a “buy local” movement taking root in New York, with restaurants and grocers reporting increased demand for New York products, but there is ample opportunity to increase the market share of these local products. Part of the answer is to expand the Pride of New York program, both in its capacity and its scope. But there is much more to do. Our state must promote programs that support farmers, improve infrastructure to move products from farm to market, and enact policies that inform consumers about the benefits of buying local. As part of this effort, my Senate Democratic colleagues and I recently proposed investing $50 million to develop downstate wholesale agricultural markets for upstate products and $50 million for a no-interest revolving loan program for farm equipment. I also recently proposed legislation that would call for “food miles” labels and country of origin labels on certain foods. Currently, the average food item travels 1,500 miles before arriving on our dinner tables, burning lots of fossil fuel and often coming from countries with less rigorous health standards. The simple fact is New York’s consumers increasingly want fresh, locally produced foods. Upstate New York has the ability to supply these products. Together, we can improve our health, our environment and our economy by creating a better link between what we grow and what we eat. SEN. DAVID J. VALESKY Oneida The writer is a ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee.

Okay...so the senator is talking 'farming'. That is all well and good. I, and I'm sure others, are in total agreement with him. But what about other jobs? Ya know, like all of the jobs that were outsourced. I guess then college is out of the question for the younger generation since there may only be farming jobs left for them. And God only knows that some of the younger generation doesn't have a clue what 'hard work is'.

I don't know of many people today who could do all the work that it takes to run a farm properly and at todays prices nobody wants to farm anyway because it's almost impossible to turn a profit doing it.
The point is not to turn a profit but to feed yourself.....sometimes I think folks forget the work involved and that apple trees, cherry trees etc really do exist or if they come from some virtual world on XBOX360-----

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

ROTTERDAM Appeal of local produce growing Price Chopper links up with area farmers BY JASON SUBIK Gazette Reporter
Price Chopper Supermarkets said that it plans to increase its purchase of locally grown produce by 25 percent. The supermarket chain, owned by Rotterdam-based Golub Corp., held the company’s second annual local growers lunch on Tuesday at Mallozzi’s Restaurant. About 50 farmers, mostly from New York state, attended the event. Keith Frosceno, Price Chopper’s vice president of produce merchandising, said Price Chopper has made it a priority over the past several years to establish a link between local farmers and produce sold at its supermarkets because “buying local” has proven to be powerful marketing brand. “It’s very difficult when you’re trading among the six states [we operate within] to distribute local produce. We have a network of farmers now, store by store, region by region,” Frosceno said. “The customers in the local areas we trade in are looking for that product. They want to know what they are buying [comes from a farm] they recognize.” Much of Price Chopper’s produce comes from Railex, a grocery shipper, located within the Rotterdam Industrial Park. Railex carries tons of produce grown on the West Coast each week to Northeast supermarket chains such as Price Chopper, Sysco Foods, U.S. Food Services, Stop N’ Shop and Wal-Mart. Frosceno said the huge shipments of produce make it cheaper to buy from Railex even with transportation costs factored in, but Price Chopper has seen that cost is not the only factor consumers consider when buying produce. “The flavor of [local grown] is generally much better because it’s quicker from the orchard or the vine to the consumer,” he said. Farmer Jim Abbruzzese, of Altamont Orchards, attended the event and said the proliferation of farmers markets in the Capital Region might be biting into Price Chopper’s business. “I think Price Chopper is trying to capture some of that business back to their stores,” he said. Price Chopper President Neil Golub spoke at Tuesday’s lunch and emphasized the importance of establishing food safety standards. He said any incident of food contamination can cause a panic in consumers that puts farmers and supermarkets out of business. Price Chopper encourages all of its food producers to adhere to the Safe Quality Food standards of the Food Marketing Institute. SQF safety certification is preferred by Price Chopper because it has standards that can be applied to many different types of food, not just produce, officials said. “We’re going to try to get [SQF instructors] here so that people don’t have to travel long distances to get that training and education,” Golub told the farmers.

Sure, and if you happen to own an almost american made car, you can drive it to a designated parking spot with a sign that was made in china, put in place by illegal immigrants. And you can go into the store a buy products made in china. And your kids can go to school to learn how to speak chinese. And then on your way home you can stop at a chinese restaurant and by an egg roll.
Oh I'm so glad we will be receiving a so called stimulus check from the government, so we can go out and by products made in china and help THEIR economy!! My check is going to be cashed and put in my safe at home.
