Dionne’s embrace of ‘Daily Kos’ is telling VITO SPINELLI Scotia
Unlike H.L. Mencken, who was indiscriminate in his criticism, E.J. Dionne is a rabid, one-sided liberal. In person, he resembles a mild-mannered apparatchik with an endearing lisp. Inside, however, beats the heart of a virulent 1960s counterculture radical. The frequency with which his column appears in the Gazette suggests a level of sympathy. For a 40-year period, liberal Democrats owned the three branches of government, and cynically, the print and broadcast media. Eventually, President Reagan broke the government monopoly, but the media remained liberal. There was no loyal opposition with any sort of mass audience. Along comes Rush Limbaugh, exposing liberal folly wherever he found it. Soon others followed and radio was once again relevant. Not content with 40 years of liberal propaganda, they [liberal Democrats] came up with what they thought would restore their former dominance. The radio program was called “Air America,” hosted by the extreme left-wing “comedian” Al Franken. It didn’t last long, and but for the infusion of millions by “moveon.org” — it would have died sooner. Dionne was bereft; he had to find another saviour to combat Limbaugh. He has succeeded in the person of one Markos Moulitsas, creator of a Web site called “Daily Kos.” Having no knowledge of this group (I do not own a computer) I was made aware last week by [Fox News’] Bill O’Reilly on his news program — can’t depend on Katie Couric. Along with O’Reilly’s description of this far-left group’s agenda, he showed a photo from their Web site. Due to the vile content, it was on for only a few seconds. This being a family newspaper, I will attempt to describe it as judiciously as I can. Recalling the encounter between Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, the photo depicts President Bush as Clinton and Sen. Joe Lieberman as Monica. This is how far E.J. Dionne has sunk. His hatred of Limbaugh is so deep he would embrace an Internet degenerate, who is no more than a left-wing loon. Dionne’s column lauding Moulitsas appeared in the Aug. 6 Gazette. Assuming we are all nudnicks, he adds an insulting disclaimer: “I dislike the use of obscenity on the Web and many online posts are way too nasty.” What exactly was Sen. Lieberman’s transgression to warrant such vile treatment? He voted to go to war against Iraq, but so did Hillary Clinton and many other Democrats. The difference being Lieberman is no longer a Democrat but an Independent who was never comfortable with the extreme left-wing of the Democratic Party — as Hillary is.
