No call for cellphones in cars First published: Tuesday, July 31, 2007
A couple guys I know have been fuming ever since they were socked with $100 fines recently for not wearing a seat belt. Each complained that seat belt violations are heavily enforced while the law prohibiting drivers from using cellphones is virtually ignored. With merit, the two grumblers say the enforcement emphasis should be reversed.
They argue that drivers not wearing a seat belt can only cause harm to themselves. In contrast, various traffic experts indicate drivers talking on cellphones have often caused accidents or otherwise disrupted traffic flow.
How many times have you been behind a driver standing still at a green light because they were more concerned about a cellphone conversation than driving? How often have you been cut off by a driver cradling a cellphone?
The two guys bending my ear said there are accident reports indicating cellphone use was the cause of a crash. But for sure there are no reports blaming the accident on a seat belt violation.
The grousers asked to remain anonymous because they are both high profile professionals. Their feelings reinforce my own so I don't mind throwing their brickbats.
I do agree that seatbelts save lives but I've always viewed that law as one that I've personally hated. I didn't vote for it and I'm sick and tired of laws being shoved down my throat by well meaning individuals. I also agree that the cell phone law is not inforced by police who'd rather wait and slap someone with a $100 fine for no seatbelt. All I'm saying is the I can think and just let me decide whether or not to wear a seatbelt, it's my life.
The seat belt laws were enforced due to cost to the insurance companies only. Insurance companies are clearly not looking out for 'our' safety. That is just the way they package it. It is all about their profits and bottom line.
SEAT BELT LAWS HAVE NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH PUBLIC SAFETY.....IT CAME DOWN THE NYS PIKE VIA THE INSURANCE COMPANIES.

That's true. If they really cared about our safety, in the case where we were in an accident, to better protect us the next time, they would LOWER our rate, not raise it.
What if you have a family of 6 and cant afford a van-----if you need/want to go somewhere together, where do all the seatbelts come from and who gets to do the ticketing, due to the inablility to afford larger vehicle in which to comply to insurance company/government mandates???.......
...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......
The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.
STOP BEING GOOD DEMOCRATS---STOP BEING GOOD REPUBLICANS--START BEING GOOD AMERICANS
BigK you are just so creative!!! And senders that was a good point about the family of 6. I don't know the answer to that one. Except TAKE THE BUS?
