Just one correction.  The United States Constitution is actually (c) 1787.  The bill of rights, which the Second Amendment is part of, was actually ratified and is (c) 1791.

Let's All Surrender Our Weapons -- You First!
by Ann Coulter (more by this author)

Updated 04/08/2009 ET

The rash of recent shooting incidents has led people who wouldn't know an AK-47 from a paintball gun to issue demands for more restrictions on guns. To be sure, it's hard to find any factor in these shootings that could be responsible -- other than the gun.

So far, this year's public multiple shootings were committed by:

-- Richard Poplawski, 23, product of a broken family, expelled from high school and dishonorably discharged from the Marines, who killed three policemen in Pittsburgh.

-- Former crack addict Jiverly Wong, 41, who told co-workers "America sucks" yet somehow was not offered a job as a speechwriter for Barack Obama, who blockaded his victims in a civic center in Binghamton, N.Y., and shot as many people as he could, before killing himself.

-- Robert Stewart, 45, a three-time divorcee and high school dropout with "violent tendencies" -- according to one of his ex-wives -- who shot up the nursing home in Carthage, N.C., where his newly estranged wife worked.

-- Lovelle Mixon, 26, a paroled felon, struggling to get his life back on track by pimping, who shot four cops in Oakland, Calif. -- before eventually being shot himself.

-- Twenty-eight-year-old Michael McLendon, child of divorce, living with his mother and boycotting family funerals because he hated his relatives, who killed 10 of those relatives and their neighbors in Samson, Ala.

It might make more sense to outlaw men than guns. Or divorce. Or crack. Or to prohibit felons from having guns. Except we already outlaw crack and felons owning guns and yet still, somehow, Wong got crack and Mixon got a gun.

After being pulled over for a routine traffic violation, Lovelle Mixon did exactly what they teach in driver's ed by immediately shooting four cops. Mixon's supporters held a posthumous rally in his honor, claiming he shot the cops only in "self-defense," which I take it includes the cop Mixon shot while the officer was lying on the ground.

I guess Mixon also raped that 12-year-old girl in "self-defense." Clearly, the pimping industry has lost a good man. I wish I'd known him. I tip my green velvet fedora with the dollar signs all over it to him. Why do the good ones always die young? Pimps, I mean.

Liberals tolerate rallies on behalf of cop-killers, but they prohibit law-abiding citizens working at community centers in Binghamton, N.Y., from being armed to defend themselves from disturbed, crack-addicted America-haters like Jiverly Wong.

It's something in liberals' DNA: They think they can pass a law eliminating guns and nuclear weapons, but teenagers having sex is completely beyond our control.

The demand for more gun control in response to any crime involving a gun is exactly like Obama's response to North Korea's openly belligerent act of launching a long-range missile this week: Obama leapt to action by calling for worldwide nuclear disarmament.

If the SAT test were used to determine how stupid a liberal is, one question would be: "The best defense against lawless rogues who possess _______ is for law-abiding individuals to surrender their own _______________."

Correct answer: Guns. We would also have accepted nuclear weapons.

Obama explained that "the United States has a moral responsibility" to lead disarmament efforts because America is "the only nuclear power to have used a nuclear weapon."

So don't go feeling all morally superior to a country whose business model consists of exporting heroin, nuclear bombs and counterfeit U.S. dollars, and of importing Swedish prostitutes, you yahoo Americans with your little flag lapel pins.

On the other hand, the Japanese haven't acted up much in the last, say, 64 years ...

Fortunately, our sailors didn't wait around for Obama to save them when Somali pirates boarded their ship this week. Stop right now or I'll ask the U.N. to remind the "international community" that "the U.S. is not at war with Somali pirates."

Gun-toting Americans are clearly more self-sufficient than the sissy Europeans. This is great news for everyone except Barney Frank, who's always secretly wondered what it would be like to be taken by a Somali pirate.

Police -- whom I gather liberals intend to continue having guns -- and intrepid U.N. resolution drafters can't be everywhere, all the time.

If a single civilian in that Binghamton community center had been armed, instead of 14 dead, there might have only been one or two -- including the shooter. In the end, the cops didn't stop Wong. His killing spree ended only when he decided to stop, and he killed himself.

"The shooter will eventually run out of ammo" strategy may not be the best one for stopping deranged multiple murderers.

But it's highly unlikely that any community center in the entire state would be safe from a disturbed former crack-addict like Wong because New York's restrictive gun laws require a citizen to prove he has a need for a gun to obtain a concealed carry permit.

Instead of having Planned Parenthood distribute condoms in schools, they ought get the NRA to pass out revolvers. It would save more lives.

How true is this statement? Allowing civilians to carry guns to protect themselves against the likes of lunatics like Wong just makes tooooo much sense.

Had enough with guns yet?

Are we there yet? Are we at least getting close to a consensus in this country that, when it comes to easy access to guns, enough may finally be enough?
The recent rash of shootings, murdersuicides and other incidents involving guns — locally as well as nationally — ought to give pause to even the most ardent gun-rights advocates.
These shootings have gone well beyond those in inner-city drug turf wars, where the victims are as likely to be criminals as the shooters. Rather, they’ve been incidents involving lots of innocent bystanders — like the one in Binghamton April 3, in which 13 were mowed down by a distaught Vietnamese immigrant; or the one in Pittsburgh a day later, in which three police officers were ambushed by a gunman in a bulletproof vest; or the one in Long Beach, Calif., Thursday, in which a hospital worker shot two colleagues before killing himself.
Closer to home were the Thruway chase/suicide Wednesday morning and the Schenectady murder-suicide Thursday night. All took place outside typical inner-city “war zones,” and should be of concern to the general populace.
It’s no secret that the troubled times have motivated a lot of these incidents. People distraught over lost jobs, houses, even families are acting out, which is hardly surprising. What has elevated the stakes more than in the past is the ease with which guns can be obtained by these people. Heck, virtually anyone in the country who wants a gun can get one. (Why else are so many guns sold in this country being smuggled into Mexico, for use by their drug lords there and sometimes back in U.S. border cities?)
While New York may have tougher laws for handguns than most states — requiring registration, permit and state police background checks — it’s still far too easy to pick up a long gun (rifle or shotgun) here. The buyer must attest to being of sound mind (not adjudicated as “mentally defective”) but lying is easy, and even if the dealers have suspicions about someone’s mental state (as they reportedly did with the Binghamton shooter), they’re in business to sell guns and make money.
But even if New York could do something to close this loophole, it wouldn’t be able to control guns sold elsewhere from coming into this state and being used to..............http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....amp;EntityId=Ar03201

'Microstamping' keeps track of handguns
Bill awaits Senate action to help trace pistols; opponents question cost, effectiveness

By RICK KARLIN, Capitol bureau
First published in print: Thursday, April 30, 2009

ALBANY — As the state Assembly passes a number of gun control measures, members of the newly Democratic state Senate joined gun control advocates to push for a proposal to mandate "microstamping" on semiautomatic pistols sold in the state.

"This is a tough-on-crime, smart-on-crime proposal," said Sen. Eric Schneiderman, D-New York City, who is shepherding the measure through the Senate.

The plan, originally put forth by Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, D-Great Neck, already passed in the lower house, where Democrats hold a 109-to-41 majority.

But with the Senate this year under a new 32-to-30 Democratic majority, advocates are hoping microstamping and other gun measures will pass there as well.

Microstamping is a process in which lasers put a distinctive mark on a weapon's firing pin. That mark is then etched into each cartridge casing when the gun is fired. Supporters including police and prosecutors say it could help them better match shell casings to a given weapon.

But the plan has opponents too, including representatives of gun manufacturers who question whether the stamps couldn't be tampered with by criminals.

Others say they fear it would add to the cost of weapons, although proponents say microstamping would add a few dollars at most.

Either way, some of the upstate-downstate divisions on this issue were on display at the Capitol on Wednesday..............................http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=795450

More redundant laws, registering pistol permits every 5 years is just another tax on the people of NYS who own guns. As far as microstamping the firing pins goes the bad guys will just change the firing pin or file off the stamp. This is another one of "up Chuck Schumer's" ideas of treating the whole state like criminals when it's only a NYC problem IMHO.

Legislators’ gun-law reform plans worthless

I read with interest the April 22 news brief, “Lawmakers want to require gun license renewals,” about the bill proposed by Sen. Eric Schneiderman and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin to reform the “dangerous lifetime permit system.” They used the April 4 shootings in Binghamton as a case in point, to create a system wherein permit holders would be required to renew every five years.
The assumption is that the proposal would make all citizens safer from gun violence. I am so exhausted by these legislators who want to guarantee their continued re-election and subsequent rip-off of taxpayers by proposing “feel good” legislation. This will accomplish nothing because the focus of the change is to make law-abiding citizens jump through hoops to continue enjoying a benefit such as the right to bear arms.
Why was [gunman] Jiverly Wong the holder of a permit? The investigation of the incident revealed that he was antisocial, mentally disturbed, depressed, acting out and had a criminal record to boot! Authorities were aware of his frailty and he was receiving counseling, threatening to harm others, and no one moved to intercede before he started shooting! Incredible! Legislators, for the most part, should be ashamed of themselves because of their incompetence and unwillingness to go after criminality; they should give more power to police and mental health professionals to deal with criminality and mental illness.
Our nation and state are in the hands of bumblers and fools who would dupe us all into helping them get awards and their names on buildings and roads before they enter their fat-cat retirements at our expense. The truth is, they, through their “feel-good” proposals, actually accomplish the opposite of making us safer, because they are in the pockets of people who profit from all the mayhem.
We need to get rid of these opportunists within our government and get rid of all ineffective laws, give law enforcers the power to be pro-active, establish a database shared by all agencies where they are aware of people like Mr. Wong and can revoke his permits and confiscate his firearms and ammunition and force him into mental health treatment or incarcerate him. Then, the citizenry would actually experience a safer environment.
Lastly, a large number of states require no permits for firearms, and they actually have lower crime rates!

I couldn't agree more.......with or without guns, legal or illegal.....show me the $$ trail..........

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

Fearing controls, packing heat
Concerns over President Obama's anti-gun stance trigger an upswing in handgun sales
.

By CAROL DeMARE, Staff writer
First published in print: Sunday, September 13, 2009

It was time, Beth Salvesen felt, to buy a gun.

She'd thought about it for a long while, and finally pulled the trigger. "It's my right and I'm 50," the Greene County resident said.

Salvesen started the permit process last December and by the end of June, she had her permit.

She is now the owner of a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver that she bought for $550. Her partner, Sherri Roff, also 50, went through the process with her and owns a Ruger Lightweight Compact Pistol .380 that runs $350.

Roff, the director of a rehabilitation center for women in Albany, said having the pistol "makes me feel safer. I have a much better chance of defending myself. Hope I never have to use it."

"We didn't want to wait any longer because you hear in the news the gun laws could change," said Salvesen, who works in construction as a painter. "I don't know if that's something against the President that the Republicans are saying or whether it's the gun people because they're the ones benefiting from it."

The two women from Freehold have joined thousands of Americans this year in becoming first-time handgun owners.

Even before the election of Barack Obama, guardians of the Second Amendment voiced fears that the new Democratic administration would lead to a crackdown on legal gun ownership. One result has been a dramatic rise in the number of New Yorkers and people across the nation applying for permits to own a handgun. That increase is borne out by the volume of applications requiring criminal history checks that are coming to the desks of local police, the FBI and, finally, judges who make the decision.

The state Division of Criminal Justice Services processes fingerprint cards for criminal history. For this year, card checks are averaging 2,288 per month, compared with an average per month last year of 1,538. Similarly, the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System data show checks jumped significantly starting the last three months of last year over the same time the year before.

Gun shops have experienced a surge in sales to people who say they want to get ahead of possible federal legislation restricting handgun ownership. Dealers also report that customers are putting up more cash for higher-quality firearms despite the faltering economy.

The spike in sales is not just from new buyers. Longtime permit holders are expanding their collections. In some New York counties, amendments to existing permits required for each new gun are going through the roof.

"It's not just new permits,'' said Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola, whose office processes handgun permits and amendments. "The guy who used to have one or two guns now has four or five, and it has a lot to do with the election."

A national poll shows Americans support the Second Amendment, said Tom King, a Rensselaer County resident who is president of the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association and a member of the National Rifle Association's board of directors...............................>>>>.........................>>>>..................http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=841433

Fears about Obama's anti gun stance also seem premature as he signed a bill into law in May making it legal for permit holders to carry in  national parks-

It's just nice to see people exercising their right to bear arms. And stimulating the economy with each purchase.
