McNULTY ANNOUNCES FEDERAL FUNDING FOR RENSSELAER AND SCHENECTADY

(Washington, DC): -- Congressman Michael R. McNulty announced today that Rensselaer County and the City of Schenectady were recognized by First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush and the Congressional Historic Preservation Caucus as recipients of Preserve America Grants at a ceremony in Washington, DC this morning.

"Both Rensselaer County and the City of Schenectady are communities with enormous historical and cultural value. This funding will give them the opportunity to further develop and share their extensive historical, cultural, and educational resources," said McNulty.

Rensselaer County will receive $23,075 for a Rensselaer County Heritage Tour. This funding will be used to develop a marketing template for the promotion of the County's historic and cultural resources. The project will create informative signs and other visitor resources to attract and inform local residents and visitors to the various towns.

Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino said, “We’re delighted that Rensselaer County has been awarded this grant as it allows us the opportunity to showcase quite a few of our significantly historic sites through a 21st century style heritage tour. Members of the County’s Historic Preservation Committee will be working on the print and audio tour that will highlight historic venues throughout the County. This collaborative initiative will also be beneficial to our businesses by bringing in visitors who will undoubtedly patronize our restaurants, stores and hotels thereby boosting our local economy.”

The City of Schenectady will receive $20,000 for a Schenectady Heritage Tourism and Management Plan. This funding will be used to create a tourism plan to identify and reflect current opportunities and obstacles. The project will study how to incorporate revitalization efforts and help manage organizational changes with the opening of a new visitors' center and expansion of heritage activities.

"The Preserve America grant will allow Schenectady to develop a comprehensive plan to preserve and promote our cultural, natural and historic resources. With our partners at the Chamber of Schenectady County we will work towards the common goal of economic development through Heritage Tourism," said Schenectady Mayor Brian U. Stratton.

Preserve America is an interagency initiative that encourages and supports the cultural, economic, and educational benefits of historic preservation and heritage tourism. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation partners with the U.S. Department of the Interior and other federal agencies to administer this program.

Nothing but add to your taxes like this...and don't forget, he also votes against funding the troops...that he originally voted to send to war.

Mike is the typical politician, tell the people what they want to hear at the time and when the tide of puplic opinion changes change with it so as not to lose any votes.

Mr. McNulty plays politics in the 'safezone'. He listens to the people (sheeple), lets them talk, does nothing and says nothing! So in essence...offends no one! That was a Tonko too!  These are political lifers who collect a public paycheck with public paid benefits!  In the private sector they would be called 'dead weight' or 'slackers'!

I think before the political battle starts for the House in 2008, we need to get this information out there so that people can realize he's just another left wing hack.  He's been in D.C. since 1988.  And who did he replace there?  Sam Stratton!

Political career
McNulty was mayor of Green Island, New York from 1977 to 1982. McNulty was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1982. In 1988, Congressman Samuel S. Stratton announced his withdrawal from the race due to health issues. McNulty was selected to replace him on the ballot and was easily elected in the heavily Democratic district, one of the few reliably Democratic areas in Upstate New York. He has been re-elected eight times without much difficulty. 2004 was his closest general election when he was challenged by Republican Warren Redlich. McNulty faced Redlich again in 2006, and was reelected with 78% of the vote. (This was 71% in 2004, too bad that's considered 'close') [1]. He also had a primary challenge in 1996 by Lee H. Wasserman, in which he won by a closer margin than he ever had in the general election.

Positions
McNulty has become much more liberal since his earlier days in the House, when he favored more of Newt Gingrich's Contract with America than any other Northeastern Democrat. He remains moderate on social issues (for instance, he is pro-life on abortion), but very liberal on economic issues.

McNulty voted for the War in Iraq, but since has come to regret that vote and has co-sponsored Representative John Murtha's resolution for a phased withdrawal from the region[1].

McNulty is known for being one of the less prolific members of the house; he has said he does not plan to run for any higher offices or leadership posts within the house. Additionally, he is known for being relatively quiet and not saying much on the floor. Congressional Quarterly once jokingly named him Chair of the Obscurity Caucus.

However, he was a vocal critic of President George W. Bush's Social Security reform plan, and, now that he is chairman of the House Subcommittee on Social Security, will probably have his profile boosted should it surface again during the 110th Congress.

Rankings/Endorsements
McNulty is generally ranked one of the worst members of the House by National Taxpayers Union (which is conservative on economic issues), while also getting very poor rankings from NARAL Pro-Choice America.

This information about Mcnulty should be brought up when he comes up for re-election too so that people can make an educated decision.

Just look at the amount of money they all make for only working for part of the year and the tremendous retirement benefits they all receive and we're paying for it all. I almost forgot the lu-lu's they get too.

[edit] Salary
The annual salary of each Representative is currently $165,200, though the Speaker of the House and the Majority and Minority Leaders earn more. The Speaker of the House earned $212,100 during the 109th Congress (January 4, 2005-January 3, 2007) while the Majority and Minority Leaders earned $183,500 (the same as the Leaders in the United States Senate). A cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) increase takes effect annually unless Congress votes to not accept it. Congress has the power to set members' salaries; however, the Twenty-Seventh Amendment prohibits a change in wages from taking effect in the same two-year term in which it is passed into law.

Let's see here.  20 years at $165,200 per year (understanding that it has raised each year with that COLA, but then it should be the same in 2007 dollars, as they say) = $3,304,000.00 of taxpayer money.

I wonder what we've really got for that, besides someone that sends our troops into war and then doesn't give them what they need to protect themselves.

I bet they could all donate some of their "wage increase" to our sewer project......certainly they have not hit the pavement to get if from anywhere else...or to even promote it.......
