Voters are in need of their own reform

First published: Monday, July 9, 2007

While all the politicians are blaming the other party for stalling campaign finance reform, I'd like to present a voters relief reform.

1. Candidates may only spend up to $1 per registered voter in their district. Material donations are included in the dollar amount.

2. No campaigning permitted before Labor Day of their election year.

3. Candidates are only allowed one negative ad. Use it wisely.

4. PACs must be in support of their candidate, not against the opponent. For example: Paddle Boat Captains for Satire in Government must run ads in support of Mark Twain, not against Jack London.

5. Candidates may gain coverage by having newsworthy commentary on their issues in the legitimate news media.

6. SPAM and you're out of the race.

I'd love to see that referendum in the voting booth come election day.

Remember, it is the politicans that would have to make this reform happen....so fat chance! They would have everything to lose. No leverage for them! We would be asking the politicians to change their campaigning tactics...and that ain't gonna happen!
