AMEDORE OPPOSES LANDFILL IN CITY OF AMSTERDAM
George Amedore, Republican candidate in the July 31st Special Election for the 105th Assembly District, today declared his opposition to a proposed landfill in the city of Amsterdam.
“Two days ago, at the abandoned Esquire Novelty factory building in Amsterdam I unveiled a five-point Jobs plan to help restore our past economic greatness. I believe the path to greatness is paved with lower taxes, brownfield remediation and aggressive marketing to attract the hi-tech manufacturing jobs, renewable energy jobs and warehouse distribution jobs that I believe we have the infrastructure and natural resources for. Having studied the landfill issue and discussing the issue with hundreds of local residents and local officials, I don’t believe the proposed landfill in the city of Amsterdam fits into that vision. I have reviewed the potential environmental and economic impacts of the landfill proposal and have come to the conclusion that this is not the right solution or the right place for this kind of project. We need a long-term county solution that benefits the entire county and the city and I will work with local residents and local officials and others to provide all the help I can as Assemblyman to make sure our community receives the highest rate of return on our investment and also that our environment and residents are protected.” ###
Well,this sounds refreshing. Cause if you look at Amsterdam, I don't know what Tonko did for that city, if anything. At lease Mr. Amedore is talking about improvements to the city. Which I'm sure is a welcome for them.

With a little over a week to go in the campaign to elect a state assemblyman in the 105th Assembly District, the Republican Assembly Campaign Committee has committed most of its available funds to trying to elect George Amedore Jr. over Democrat Ed Kosiur. The RACC has committed $280,000 to the race, according to Phil Oliva, who is using vacation days from his job as chief spokesman for Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco, R-Schenectady, to volunteer for the Amedore campaign. According to the RACC’s latest electronic filing with the state Board of Elections, its contributions to the Amedore campaign have left it with only $109,383 cash on hand. The Democratic Assembly Campaign Committee is in better financial shape, reflecting the ability of the majority Democrats in that house to raise and spend more money than Assembly Republicans. Kathleen Joyce, executive director of DACC, said it has spent about $210,000 so far on the Kosiur campaign, and expects to spend more. It can afford to, since it has $984,946 cash in hand, according to the Board of Elections. The RACC and DACC are providing the great majority of funding for the respective campaigns. Oliva said the RACC has spent about $200,000 so far, and may not go above the $280,000 it has committed to the race. Most of the money on both sides is going to TV and radio advertising, and direct mail. Assembly Majority Leader Ron Canestrari, D-Cohoes, co-chairman of the DACC, said Democrats will not be outspent in the race. Oliva said Democrats typically have been able to spend several times more than Republican Assembly candidates, and that while Republicans may be outspent in this race, it will not be by such a wide margin. The Democrats are defending the seat of former Assemblyman Paul Tonko, who resigned to become head of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. Tonko has appeared in ads for Kosiur, and his election committee still has $109,762 in hand, according to the Board of Elections. The district includes much of Schenectady and all of Montgomery counties, and Democrats have a 30,654-25,891 registration advantage. Democrats are also coming off a very successful election year in 2006 and have been gaining ground upstate in recent years. Nevertheless, the RACC financial commitment shows that Republicans are determined to win the seat. At a Friday news conference, the local Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Kosiur and attacked the environmental record of Amedore’s construction company, saying it built a condominium project “with its huge impervious surface footprint in the midst of the Great Flats Aquifer Recharge Area and Nature Trail.” Amedore said the project in question was approved by town of Rotterdam, Schenectady County, state and federal authorities, “the whole nine yards. I preserved wetlands, I didn’t impact or disturb them. … The [Department of Environmental Conservation] commended us on the project.” The Sierra Club also lauded Kosiur for his environmental record on the Schenectady County Legislature, including support for the Woodlawn Park Preserve. Amedore cited the environmental features of his economic development plan, including boosting ethanol production and cleaning up brownfields. Amedore held his own news conference at which he cited votes taken by Kosiur as a county legislator to raise taxes. The Democrat responded that Amedore was ignoring more frequent votes Kosiur made to cut taxes. A Kosiur flier says he “authored a law to keep dangerous sex predators away from our kids.” Amedore has said that new law could have the unintended consequence of driving sex offenders into western Schenectady County. Kosiur, who did not return several calls for comment Friday, has been endorsed by labor unions including, on Friday, New York State United Teachers. Amedore has been endorsed by the state chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business. Amsterdam radio station WVTL, AM 1570, will broadcast a debate between the candidates at 9 a.m. Monday, July 30, the day before the election. WVTL’s Bob Cudmore will moderate.

From what I remember, Phil Olivais a great guy and former quarterback of the Schalmont Varsity Football team, so he knows what people around here want and in his position would be a very good person to bring things to light for people around here. Mr. Amedore is himself a mid-80's graduate of Schalmont also.
I knew some of the kids back then and they all had good things to say about 'all' of the Amedore's!

Gay marriage issue key in 105th race Candidates Amedore, Kosiur seeking Assembly seat differ on how they would vote on same- sex legislation

SCHENECTADY -- Both candidates for the 105th Assembly District say they are opposed to gay marriage, yet how they would vote on same-sex legislation could provide a deciding point for some voters in the special election next week. George Amedore Jr., a Republican, said he is against same-sex unions. But Ed Kosiur, a Democrat, said he would put aside religious beliefs and vote in favor of same-sex legislation.
"I do not support same-sex marriage," said Amedore, who said he's been married for 17 years and has three children. His comments came during a meeting with the Times Union editorial board Tuesday. "I believe marriage should be between one man and one woman," he said.
Later, Amedore, 38, a GOP newcomer, said through a campaign spokesman that he supports health benefits for partners of gay and lesbian state employees but believes private companies should make the decision for themselves.
Proposed same-sex legislation has passed in the state Assembly but has not come up for discussion in the Senate. From the Capital Region, Assemblyman Ron Canestrari, D-Cohoes, and fellow Democrats Jack McEneny of Albany and Paul Tonko of Amsterdam voted for the measure, while Democrat Robert Reilly of Colonie, Republican Minority Leader James Tedisco of Schenectady and independent Tim Gordon of Bethlehem voted against it.
It's Tonko's seat, which represents most of Schenectady County and all of Montgomery County, the two men are vying to take. Tonko left the seat to take over as president and CEO of the state Energy and Research Development Authority.
The special election is Tuesday.
Tonko has been stumping for Kosiur, who is married with three children and said he would support the legislation.
"If it does come to a vote, I will vote that way because that's the way the majority of my constituents want me to vote," said the 51-year-old Democratic Schenectady County Legislator. "I have to vote according to the way my constituency feels."
Libby Post, who lives in Menands and is a nationally syndicated columnist on lesbian and gay issues, said Amedore is "not in tune with the electorate."
She lauded Kosiur for his stance.
"I think he generally wants to reflect the will of his constituency and that's laudable," Post said.
I was wondering if Mr. Amedore had seeked an endorsement from the New York State Taxpayers Union, http://www.nystu.org. I did give them a call tonight and left a voicemail stating that I think they should think about endorsing Mr. Amedore. With what Mr. Amedore is looking to do to save the residents of the 105th district and all across New York State, I believe that it would be a great show of cooperation for these two to join forces.
I look forward to a great finish to the campaign and look forward to being represented, finally, by a new face who actually understands what the residents of this district want and need.

Thank you so much for your support and this great suggestion. We will contact the New York State Taxpayers Union and seek an endorsement. As you are probably aware, George has pledged to never vote for a tax increase and will fight to not only cap property taxes, but to lower them. This is especially important since residents in Schenectady County pay the eighth highest property taxes in the nation. With your help on July 31st, we can begin to bring real change and a better quality of life to our region.

Wow BK, I am impressed! Both with your email to them and theirs in return. The reps stay somewhat clean due to their 'un-involvement' with the corrupt, controlling unions! I really would not like to see the unions endorse Amedore! They back Kosiur and that is one and only one of the reasons I won't vote for Kosiur!

Capping school property taxes at age 65 and allowing seniors to deduct up to $1,000 of out-of-pocket prescription costs not covered by insurance from their income taxes are among the proposals George Amedore Jr. believes would help seniors remain healthy and happy.
The 105th Assembly District Republican candidate unveiled his ”Senior Advantage Plan” during a press conference in Amsterdam this afternoon.
”Seniors have paid their fair share to support our schools for generations,” Amedore said in a prepared statement. ”It’s not right that the people who have worked all their lives to build communities and raise families now have to suffer because our state can’t control the cost of government.”
Other components include: increasing the personal allowance needs of nursing home resident and promoting support services to caregivers to allow them to keep their elderly relative at home.
Voters will choose between the homebuilder Amedore, 38, and County Legislator Ed Kosiur, 51, during a special July 31 election.
The coveted seat became available when longtime popular Democratic Assemblyman Paul Tonko left in late June to take over as president of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
