I think you are all splitting hairs here. Of course one expects the best emergency medical care from their emergency provider. that's a given.

However, putting a patient and loved ones at ease during the process is also expected. A patient's positive mental attitude while receiving professional medical care is just as important.Ya know.....'relax', 'you're gonna be fine', 'we're gonna do the best we can to save your loved one'.

If one is void of this compassion and human understanding while providing medical assistance, they shouldn't be in the medical field. IMHO

I agree that these qualities are important...but I also think that virtually all emergency responders have them...it's the nature
of their business...those who possess these traits tend to be drawn to these professions...which is why I do not think that this
element should guide a decision on the ems contract...no matter who the ems provider is, the compassion and understanding
is a common denominator...but that is where the commonalities end. We cannot say the same about the business practices,
revenue potential, resources, level of care, response times, etc. from one provider to the next.

ND has forced the ALS issue...

The town board has been in executive session for about an hour discussing the REMS/Rotterdam Paramedics lawsuit and
EMS contract.

Check back later....

8:15...the Board is out of executive session

The Town attorney stated that Chief Hamilton believes that if the bid goes to Mohawk, REMS would be out of business.

There will be a special meeting Monday 5/2 at 7pm at Town Hall...REMS and Mohawk will be notified to appear and present their
cases.

Well if they can't put up a competitive bid then like all businesses they should go out of business.

Ya think?

Hell, rems had $250K of als money handed over to them, als money still not going back to the taxpayers, and they still can't make it! So what is the problem here folks? Mohawk should get the bid. It's really a no brainer, but only in rotterdam do these issues seem to confuse you folks!

Firsthand experience showed value of REMS

The Rotterdam Emergency Medical Services [REMS] is to be commended for its prompt service and excellent care it gave to one of its citizens.
Recently my husband and I were driving on Altamont Avenue [when] my husband saw an elderly woman fall into the road. He immediately pulled over to assist, along with a man in a red pickup truck.
The woman was bleeding and had hit her face, which was already swollen. A man at the bus stop came across the street and called 911. Within minutes REMS came to evaluate the emergency. They gave the woman excellent care and were a comfort to her during this time of stress. She asked how much this was going to cost and they told her there was no charge.
It is good to know that the town of Rotterdam is so dedicated to its citizens.

Keep in mind, that if REMS did not transport the patient (as the story does not indicate that a transport followed their care on the scene), the REMS EMT is correct.  Most ambulance agencies who are not transporting a patient (generally at the patient's request) do not bill the patient for their on-scene service.  In these scenarios, insurance or billing information is generally not obtained, the patient signs a release indicating that the patient has declined transport to the hospital.

Who at REMS decides when to and not to charge for the service?  Does REMS as a business have a written policy that outlines when they are to charge and when they don't, so when they go to the Town begging for money, the Town knows how many calls were routed to Mohawk because REMS was on a 'free' service call.  How many free service calls has REMS provided for Town residents?  They should be able to provide a hard number of non billing calls.  How many billable calls did the REMS lose because they were at a non billing call?

REMS (as is Mohawk) is required to comply in full spirit with medical billing laws as set forth by the federal government to qualify for payment through entitltement programs (Medicare and Medicaid).  Additionally, you should note that nearly 100% of the time when a call is dispatched through 911 (RPD PSAP) the REMS staff would not know if transport is being provided or not for a patient.

So what you are saying is, REMS didn't provide and unique service to the Town of Rotterdam that wouldn't have been otherwise provided if Mohawk was dispatched to the call.  Correct?  Whatever Ambulance care provided to that pactient would have been no charge if there was no transport.

Technically, your statement is correct.  REMS was providing a high quality service, quickly, efficiently and urgently (as requested through 911 dispatch).
