Well your taxes are will stay lower and I have a dead brother-in-law because the response time was not what it should have been.  My sister and my baby niece are alone this Christmas because the ambulance couldn't find the house.  I wouldn't want to see any family suffer the way my family is.  Maybe some of you should begin thinking with a wider scope.

Great job by KR and a great turnout by property owners.

I am impressed that so many rotterdamians came out to vote. Considering all of the obstacles, there was a great turn out! Kudos to the rotterdam residents!

I hope this is a smart result.  I can only say that I don't live in Town anymore but I come back for work.  Last Spring, Mohawk ambulance couldn't find my sister's house and my brother-in-law aged 38 died from a heart attack leaving her a 34 yr old widow having her first baby alone. This may not have been a good vote for Rotterdam residents.  I think you have made a mistake.

alleykat,

I am very sorry for your loss.  Your apprehension regarding the implications of todays vote is understandable.

In my opinion, there are two scenarios that would reduce the likelihood of tragedies such as that which your family experienced.

REMS could become a for-profit business and compete for the contracted services of the Town of Rotterdam.  They will,
of course, have to change many things in their operations, first and foremost of which is their billing model if they are to
survive and prosper.

The other scenario is one that I understand was proposed by Mohawk a year and a half to two years ago, whereby Mohawk
would purchase the assets (building, equipment, vehicles) of REMS and hire the REMS employees.  This would result in local
residents who have familiarity with the town serving their friends, families and neighbors.

MT--the house was clearly marked.  It is a brand new home.  My sister is and always has been a rock during a crisis.  She told them her street name had changed because of the new development on her street.  This is beyond tragic for my family.  I know my sister was one of the residents who voted YES.

Who did she call - Rotterdam dispatchers or 911 operators (which I believe would be Schdy County) ?  I'm just wondering where the breakdown in communications occurred - and why, if it was in Rotterdam, didn't they dispatch REMS - or did they, and perhaps they couldn't get a crew together then they handed off to MAS.   There's SOMETHING about that situation that has never made sense to me. I know most of the details, but there's still questions in my mind

I truly offer prayers for your family during this Christmas season, as I've expressed to your other family members. I can't say I've been where you and your family are, but I've lost relatives on major holidays like this. I pray you get some comfort from this tragedy soon.

I totally agree. Rems could actually scale down, hard bill and service princetown and duanesburg exclusively. And backup rotterdam.....no?

Question......will or should the rotterdam elected officials still ask for an audit since there is still a question of the missing als money?

... to divert ambulance calls to Rotterdam ... One is the response time from Rotterdam ... there is no talk of them being involved in mutual aid. You are calling Rotterdam and ...
http://www.duanesburg.net/govt/docs/townboard/publichearings
/...  This was stated in the minutes of a meeting in Duanesburg meeting that REMS took 40 minutes to arrive on the scene of an accident on I88 so every ambulance service can have something like a slow responce happen to them. It's unfortunate when it happens and sometimes there are bad endings to them. All fire depts, police depts, and EMS services all say to mark your house number or 911 number clearly marked and visible from the road and give as much information to the dispatcher as possible to aid the responders.

MT--thank you very much.  My sister dialed 9-11. They stayed on the phone with her and gave her instructions on what to do until they got there.  I know that for sure.  Is there a different procedure for 9-11 calls?.  I will tell my parents of your prayers and good wishes.  For me it is back to Chicago tomorrow until Christmas.  My mother especially will appreciate your thoughts.  She is very religious and spiritual.  Do you know her or my father?  Maybe you knew my brother-in-law--he wasa Conservative.  Made dinner very exciting at my house with my Mom.

Hope your Christmas is a good one too.  Thank you again.

Is DV lurking around on here, not signed in?    Or is he at his subsitute mama'a house moping around, crying, whining, and sub-mama is saying "there there now, sonny, everything will be ok, auntie is here."

Wait!   He's down at one of those taxfunded gin mills drowning in his sorrows.

Unfortunately, I've only met one member of your family previously, but I've had in depth talks about this situation.

Yes, 911 calls are handled differently.  I'll speak to your mother tomorrow I hope.

Have a safe trip!

You're not serious are you?  My condolences on your loss, but since you are going to politicize your loss, I will offer my opinion without worry of sounding callous.  But, you really aren't going to bed each night believing Mohawk Ambulance Service is responsible for your brother-in-laws death, are you?  He was only 38 years old; did he have an abnormal condition that caused this heart attack?  How about life style choices, did that play a role?   And to make the leap that this wouldn't have occurred if REMS were the responders is fallacious and illogical.  Rotterdam made the right decision tonight.  In life there are no guarantees, no matter who the EMS Company is, they are all still humans, and humans make mistakes.

P.S.

The voting arrangement was a metaphor for Rotterdam...No vision - no planning.  It was awful!

Is Brian and the NNTP guys putting together political mailers yet?

I have an idea for one...Send out a mailer with the Schalmont/Syracuse survey that showed 60% opposed a taxing district, then show the cost related for having the election for a taxing district that public opinion was overwhelmingly against.  Then show our elected officials public position on the taxing district.(All in favor since they ALL voted to create a taxing district)

I can come up with tons of these.

Democracy?  Yeah we elected them in in November.  They just held an unnecessary referendum vote for a taxing district that was opposed through public polling.  Who or what was the driving force behind this unnecessary referendum?  Because obviously it wasn't the everyday resident.  Special interest?

Like Senders says "SHOW ME THE MONEY" Where's that ALS money?  Who stood to gain both politically and financially?
