What about the seniors that don't drive anymore that would come out to support it that are afraid to drive on the roads if the snow is flying? And then, will the special election in Rotterdam be justification for the fact that sales taxes are down for the year, considering all town residents that want to vote have to stand in line at town hall, since you're not going to have voting booths in other locations around town? 11 days before Christmas,nobody is supposed to have plans, right?

And - how many locations will be open? Provisions for absentee voting? Status of multiple taxpayers on the same property voting?
So, they're getting $120,000 / yr from the town now. IF this tax passes, they're going to get twice as much ($240,000). I thought they weren't operating in the red now? If that's true, what do they need a 100% increase in stipend for?

Of course there is no contingency plan...that's the whole idea...plan the vote at a time when it is unlikely that anyone but the interested parties will turn out...the Fourth of July vote was nixed...so let's go for the next biggest holiday and maybe even an added bonus in the form of a hefty snow storm....a week and a half before Christmas should do. This was always intended to be what amounts to a fixed vote.
Additionally, as MT asked, no guidelines have been set with regard to absentees, number of locations, voter eligibility...and no one has addressed the issue of owners of multiple properties.
Council Member DiLeva has assured me that she will pursue clarification on these items...and will move to postpone the vote again if they are not addressed in time for sufficient notice to the public.

Town officials set a vote for a proposed ambulance district and have included a contingency that it would support the Rotterdam Emergency Medical Services Inc. if it is approved. After some discussion, board members unanimously approved Dec. 14 as the date for the referendum during a special meeting Tuesday. They also included a provision specifying that any tax established through the vote will go to support the non-profi t ambulance service now operating in the town. “In the event the vote for the special district passes, then the [ambulance] contract will be awarded to REMS,” said board member Nicola DiLeva, who demanded the addendum be included in a trio of resolutions offered by Supervisor Frank Del Gallo. Last month, Del Gallo indicated the referendum would support REMS if it passes. But he said the town will seek a contract with Mohawk Ambulance, the Schenectady-based for profi t company, if residents reject the tax district. DiLeva and board member Gerard Parisi were both uncomfortable with a mere verbal explanation of this designation. My understanding is that the sole polling place is Rotterdam Town Hall, 8:00 am - 8:00 pm. It is also my understanding that every individual listed as an owner on a property will have the right to vote, however multiple property owners can only vote once. How that gets enforced is anyone's guess. Absentee ballots, I haven't heard anything on that!
What's the matter? They couldn't schedule it for Christmas Eve?

The whole procedure doesn't pass the smell test in the way that it's being done. Is it even legal.
The referendum is being conducted the same way that referendums for sewer districts or water districts are conducted. It is perfectly legal.
